The project begins with the technique of ‘feedback elimination’ from audio engineering—in which resonant frequencies are identified—and transforms the broadcasting equipment (radios, headphones, microphones, and cables) into a responsive ‘instrument’. This instrument, which comes to life amidst the wailing of sirens and the ringing of bells, hums with feedback, capturing and displacing voices and other sounds from its surroundings. Like a network of radios connected via cables and headphones, the work offers a combination of noise music, a possessed broadcast, and acoustic archaeology, inviting reflection on forbidden listening techniques from the Middle Ages, cybernetics from the 1950s, sound art from the 1970s, and artificial intelligence. Spectators and artists are invited to make their voices heard and participate, contributing to a growing, temporary archive of ephemeral sound spaces.

‘After the siren, before the bell’ is presented as a series of public installations and performances at various locations in Amsterdam and takes place on the first Monday of the month. It begins after the public test alarms have fallen silent at 12:01:27 and ends just before the major city churches ring their bells at 12:59:59. In this brief interim period, the installation creates an acoustic vortex, sucking in and pulling apart listeners, voices, and ambient sounds, thus shaping a torn sonic topography.

A light lunch will be served after the performance. RSVP: info@burobradwolff.nl
