Artist Paula Albuquerque presents her latest exhibition, ‘Embodiments of dissent (on proto-surveillance, the gesture and vitality)’, at Bradwolff Projects, in which she explores the complex relationship between film archives, colonialism, and surveillance. Through her thought-provoking works, she challenges visitors to reflect critically on important aspects of our contemporary society. Albuquerque reveals how images of racially marked and domesticated bodies exert power and control. Additionally, she studies how the weary body of the working woman is depicted in silent film, thereby bringing traditional gender dynamics to light.
The exhibition invites reflection and dialogue, and hopes to contribute to a greater understanding of the complex themes. Albuquerque goes beyond merely revealing historical connections. Through her work in the exhibition, she creates a space where visitors are confronted with uncomfortable histories and challenged to reflect on the implications of these representations in our contemporary society.
In addition to unraveling and revealing complex themes, she also aims to provide a platform for critical reflection and dialogue. Her intriguing representations challenge the viewer, thereby shedding new light on the use of the medium of film.
Paula Albuquerque is an experimental filmmaker and researcher. After studying at the Sandberg Institute (Visual Arts), she obtained her PhD in Artistic Research from the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (University of Amsterdam).
