Galicia is a small province of Spain and lies above Portugal on the Atlantic coast. Many people only know this province from the city of Santiago de Compostela. If you walk along the coast with Google Streetview [do it!] You will see rugged rocks, white beaches and long rows of dunes. Not really a tourist area and that will undoubtedly have to do with the fact that the weather in that region is not always nice weather and Spain is primarily a sunny holiday country. As a child, visual artist Isabel Meniño spent the holidays in this area and learned to cook from her father. He cooked with respect for nature and attention for family and friends. The area where the summer holidays were spent was and is an important province for the supply and processing of fish. The best quality crustaceans and shellfish in particular come from the natural ponds that originated in the narrow mouths of the ocean.

The book My kitchen of Galicia is an ode to this special area and its culinary traditions. Both the people of Galicia and nature and culture are fundamentally different from the Spain that many of us know.

We find many fish, shellfish and shellfish recipes in the book. But other ingredients also come by and those who are not so fond of fish will find enough of their liking. The names of the chapters and the dishes are in Spanish with a Dutch translation. We see dishes like Shrimp with garlic and sherry, Empanada with sardines, Farm stew with chickpeas and cabbage, Pasta with pulled pork. Delicious sweets such as Almond cake, Lemon cake and Hazelnut jokes. An important part of the book are the photos made by Danny de Jong. Beautiful photos of the dishes and ingredients.

The photos of Galicia, taken by Isabel Meniño herself, also contribute to the special atmosphere in this book. The book is bound in a special way. When you open the book you think it is broken because the back is not attached to the cover. But that is not the case and it is precisely this way of binding that ensures that the book is easily left open and does not break easily. You wish all cookbooks were published that way.

Isabel Meniño is the initiator and developer of MOOF, Museum Of Our Food, an innovative museum format in which the senses, visual arts, food culture, heritage, science and food education meet in a sensory and dynamic way. In 2016, she founded the MOOF Foundation, Museum Of Our Food with the ambition to establish this museum in Amsterdam in 2020.
